Herbs and Harvest: Guide to Cheese Making
Part 1: Supplies
For Cheese Making, you will want to be sure you have:
- Milk Buckets (All types, if you want to make different cheeses)
- A Cauldron with a heat source below it (Campfire, or Fire)
- Rennet
- Salt
- A Cheese Shelf for Aging
Once you have your supplies ready, you will need to decide on what type of cheese you want to make. There are 8 total types of cheeses, and each uses a unique mixture of milks to create. Milk mixtures for Cheese recipes are as follows:
-
Hard Cheeses
- Cheddar: Cow Milk
- Gouda: Sheep Milk
- Parmesan: Cow Milk, Goat Milk
- Swiss: Sheep Milk, Goat Milk
- Caravane: Camel Milk
- Chevre: Goat Milk
- Feta: Camel Milk, Goat Milk
- Ricotta: Camel Milk, Sheep Milk
Soft Cheeses
Once you have decided on a recipe, and you have your other supplies, it's time to start creating the Cheese.
- Make sure your Caluldron is heated below, and add your Milk to the Cauldron. For a mix of Milk types, add one, then quickly add the other.
- Next, QUICKLY add your Rennet. This is important, because if Rennet is not added quickly enough, the Milk will cook into Cream.
- When Rennet is added, you will see the mixture in the cauldron immediately change. It will begin to move, and after some time, will change once more, into Curds and Whey. This looks like a yellow liquid with white bits that bubble to the surface.
- When your Cauldron is full of Curds and Whey, the next thing to do is to us Salt on the Cauldron. This will Solidify the cheese into a Wheel.
- Your Cauldron should be empty after receiving the Cheese Wheel.
The next part depends on what type of Cheese you have made. If your Cheese recipe was a Soft Cheese, then there is nothing else to do; it's ready to go. Place it down, and click on it to receive a wedge of Cheese. If you have crafted a Hard Cheese recipe, the Wheel you receive will be a "Raw" Wheel of that Cheese type, which will need to be aged. Add the Raw Wheel to a Cheese Shelf so that it can age. You will be able to see it change on the shelf, when it is aged. After the Cheese has aged, the Wheel of Cheese will be placeable, and when clicked on, will give Wedges of Cheese.
Note: Once it is placed, Cheese cannot be picked back up, not even with Silk Touch.
Automation
Adding Rennet or Salt to the Cauldron can be automated with a Dispenser. Adding the The Milk mixtures to the Cauldron cannot be automated. If Milk has cooked into Cream, extraction of the Cream Bucket can also be automated.
